These earlier dated coins saw a much lower mintage figure than those produced later in the series. Due to the lack of a mintmark, the 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar was minted in Philadelphia at the US Mint’s main branch. The New Orleans Mint struck over 9 million Morgan Dollars in 1885. However, many of those did not circulate, but instead sat in Treasury vaults until the 1960’s. Many uncirculated bags were released in the 1960’s, making this issue one of the most common in high grade. In fact, NGC has graded over 30,000 examples in gem or higher! Mint State grades: The 1885-O is the most common of all New Orleans Mint silver dollars in Uncirculated grade and among certified coins from this mint is the most common issue at levels from MS-63 through MS-65.
